• Book 3 of Fiona Quinn’s high-octane series continues to pump a lot of action and mental strategizing into a compelling narrative that explores the worlds of black ops, accident rehabilitation, and the camaraderie of teammates.
  
  Lexi Sobado uses up another of her nine lives by surviving a terrible plan wreck after her prison interment. She’s found in the nick of time, quite literally as she’s passing to the other side, and begins a painful rehabilitation for her physical wounds and her emotional trauma from both wrong turns.
  
  The “right” turn is her life is Strike Force Team. They are dedicated to keeping her safe and under the radar, even when the bad guys come after her with lethal intentions. Lexi doesn’t know what she did to be on anyone’s hit list, and she’s got time to puzzle it out as she mends.
  
  I enjoyed the relationships of the team members and her love interest, Striker. Another highlight I enjoyed was the way her psychic senses used fairy tales to parse out information to her. This story definitely made me think and wonder why the guy pulling the strings in this story was always a step ahead. Not once does the author hint that there’s an “inside man” but Lexi’s dream about a rat is an excellent means of foreshadowing that rings true once Lexi puzzles out the scenario.
  
  I recommend this series, and you should start with book one for maximum enjoyment.

• I enjoyed this book. Fiona Quinn is an amazing author who else could make 35 chapters of physical rehab exciting? Once the fan finally does get messy, carefully-laid clues start falling into place like dominoes and still the denouement contains surprises. (Don't skip ahead to the action or the falling-in-place will mean nothing.)
  
  I started reading the Lynx serious with this third volume and felt thoroughly introduced to the characters and situation, without tedious exposition.
  
  I am looking forward to reading other books in the series.

  Lexi has escaped the prison in Honduras and has crashed her plane. Her Iniquus team members have found her and transported her to a hospital as she is injured real bad. As you remember, she actually died at the end of book 2. Her pain and the descriptions of her condition are very authentic.
  It is clear Fiona Quinn has done outstanding research, I was awed at how intricate the plot is.
  
  Striker and Lexi are in love, but Lexi has to heal and must stay hidden because of her unknown enemies. I like them as a couple and would love for them to build a life together.
  
  This series has earned a spot on my keeper-shelf and I am looking forward to the next book.
• Another fantastic book by Fiona Quinn! The story opens with Lexi waking up in the hospital in the most severe condition imaginable. Her body has been devastated, but her mind, oh her mind, it just never stops. I love how analytical she is and I must be frank, that is one of the main reasons I’m in love with her character. Her mind is like a machine, but it certainly doesn’t mean she is lacking emotion. The other great thing about Lexi is her will. It is like steel. You can totally see her overcoming every physical adversity and how she just pulls her body along.
  
  In this story we really get to see Lexi’s mental acuity as she begins to unwind the case and gets to the heart of who is really causing the problems.
  
  The best news? Striker finally makes his move! Yay! Go Striker and Lexi!
  
  Another non-stop action and thrills story that will leave you begging for more. I can’t wait for book 4!
• I have become deeply invested in the characters of the Lynx series, and so I eagerly dove into this third book. I was not disappointed by the quality of the writing and the development of both the plot and the characters. This book was more expository than the first two, though it had its share of pulse-pounding moments, but that gave the audience a little time to breathe and get to know the main characters better. Ms. Quinn has a beautiful knack for words and description, and the book is full of little gems just begging to be read. If you've read the first two books and are looking for something else to read, I would highly recommend "Chain Lynx" as the next book to grab.
• Very exciting. I never heard of a person getting into as much trouble and danger as Lynx does in this book. Even with a whole team protecting her,she is constantly under attack! Very entertaining.
• I'm a new Fiona Quinn reader, a friend shared her with me about 2 weeks ago. In that time I have read 7 of her books! I love her! She has a way of bringing her characters to life that makes them become your best friends. Once I start a book I can't stop til the end and this one was exactly the same. Highly recommend!

"Reader be warned -- despite being adapted into various kids' books and movies over time, "Gulliver's Travels" is NOT a children's book. The concept may sound like a children's fairy tale, but Jonathan Swift intended this book to be a parody of the travel books of his time, as well as a scathing satire of British culture and government of the day. And to be honest... despite the imaginative concepts behind it, it's a very tedious book to plow through. It's worth a read at least once, to get the gist of the story and appreciate what Swift was trying to do, but overall it was a chore to read.

"Gulliver's Travels" follows Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's surgeon who has a passion for traveling the world. Through shipwrecks, pirate attacks, and other various misadventures, he finds himself in various strange locations all over the world -- an island populated by tiny people who see him as a giant, a land of giants who see him as a tiny person himself, a floating island of self-professed geniuses whose philosophies and inventions are nothing short of insane, a race of immortals who prove that immortality isn't all its cracked up to be, and a race of intelligent horses who view humans as abominable beasts. And along the way Gulliver has a chance to proclaim the might and supposed superiority of the British Empire... only for his claims to be laughed at and proven wrong along the way.

For those only familiar with "Gulliver's Travels" via children's adaptations or *sigh* the Jack Black film, this book will probably be something of a surprise. Most adaptations only show Gulliver's adventures in Lilliputa (though some will also depict his journey to the land of giants as well), and skip the last half of the book entirely. Your mileage may vary on whether this is a bad thing or not -- it does cut out some of Gulliver's more fantastic journeys, but also trims out some of the political satire and more outlandish misadventures. Still, the land of intelligent horses was interesting, and it's a shame it doesn't get more attention in adaptations.

The writing itself comes across as stilted and stuffy compared to modern-day writing, with a lot of archaic and now-obscure words and terms scattered throughout, so unless you read a lot of classics you'll probably have a hard time getting through the writing style. Beyond the writing style, the book can get boring and tedious to read, especially as Swift has no problems screeching the plot to a halt in order to have Gulliver monologue about his precious British Empire and his homeland's way of life and politics, so that other characters might point out the flaws for themselves or otherwise skewer his pride in his homeland. In its day it was probably a cutting-edge satire, meant to be a punch in the gut to its readers, but nowadays it can be frustrating to read.

That's not to say there's nothing of worth in this book. It's still a curiosity to read, and it's nice to get the full story of the book instead of a bloodless and heavily-edited children's adaptation. And it's interesting to compare it to its various adaptations. (Fun fact -- the scene in the Jack Black film adaptation of "Gulliver's Travels" where Gulliver puts out a fire by urinating on it? It wasn't just added for the sake of bathroom humor -- it's an actual scene from the original book!)

Worth a look as a curiosity, especially if you're only familiar with the story from a film or children's adaptation, or if you're interested in 18th-century literature and satire. It's not a book I'm sure I'll reread, however, and I found myself bored by it and skimming chunks where the author monologues about the problems of British society of the day. And parents should probably opt for an abridged adaptation for their kids -- something I don't always recommend, but do so for this book."

• [Note the free edition, titled _Gulliver's Travels Into Several Remote Regions of the World_, includes only the first two parts of the four sections that make up Swift's book. In this review, however, I consider _Gulliver's Travels_ in its entirety, hence the five-star rating.]
  
  When I was a child, growing up in Latin America, my parents would buy me a magazine that included the classics of world literature in simplified versions. There were at least two collections, and they include such works as _The Little Prince_, _The Iliad_, _The Jungle Book_, _Romeo and Juliet_, _Don Quixote_, _Robinson Crusoe_, _Around the World in 80 Days_, and of course, _Gulliver's Travels_. Swift wrote an acid satire on politics, reason, science, and humanity in general, yet his book metamorphosed into children's literature. Even this transformation attests to the greatness of _Gulliver's Travels_. In order for a book to transform itself that way, it has to be more than a simple artifact; this book is a living organism.
  
  While _Robinson Crusoe_ (1719) can be described as a novel (some call it the first English novel), _Gulliver's Travels_ (1726) falls into a different category. The best way to describe Swift's book would be as a fake travel narrative. Swift, in other words, was playing with genre conventions the way postmodernists would, some 200 years later. _Gulliver's Travels_ can be filed--with some alterations--under Children's Literature because it is an adventure story, and because of its unforgettable images. This is what generally comes to mind when _Gulliver's Travels_ is mentioned a race of minute beings, a race of gigantic beings, a flying island, rational horses. Yet this book features a good deal of scatological humor. Gulliver extinguishes a fire by urinating on it. In the flying island, a group of scientists try to find a way to turn feces back into food. There are also many instances of the grotesque, especially the description of breastfeeding in the second voyage.
  
  _Gulliver's Travels_ is divided into four parts, each of which could be read independently. The most famous, and perhaps the most "harmless" is the first, the voyage to Lilliput, during which Gulliver meets a race of tiny people. This first voyage satirizes politics in Swift's time. For example Gulliver is criticized by the creative way in which he extinguished the fire, and even though he had good intentions, he achieved a good result through a foul method. Gulliver is, in this particular case, Swift, writing biting satires in order to inspire change in his society. The second voyage takes our "hero" to Brobdingnag, where people are huge. It is all a matter of comparison now, Gulliver is the Lilliputian. (Voltaire would write on the exact same theme, under the direct influence of Swift, his 1750 story _Micromégas_.) The third voyage was the last to be written, and it is, in my opinion, the most imaginative. A flying island sounds like a wonderful thing. This island is called Laputa, a name you're familiar with if you're a Miyazaki fan. If you know Spanish you'll laugh, and you're meant to. (In my children's edition of the book, by the way, the island's name was changed to Lupata, for obvious reasons.) Laputa is a satire on the Royal Society, which was dedicated to knowledge through science, following the Cartesian belief that knowledge should be objective and the product of reason. Laputa rules since it is in the sky, it can fly over any potential rebellious region below and block the sun and rain. The third voyage also includes visits to other lands, such as Luggnagg, where Gulliver meets a race of immortals, and Glubbdubdrib, where the traveler can talk with ghosts.
  
  The fourth and last section of the book requires a separate paragraph. This is the voyage to the land of the Houyhnhnms, a word that appears impossible to pronounce until the reader is told that it is basically the neighing of a horse. Houyhnhnms are just that, horses, but these animals are pure reason. They show no emotions, and they have subjected a grotesque, nearly human race known as the Yahoos (Swift coined this term, incidentally). Gulliver loves the Houyhnhnms, and he cannot stand the fact that, to them, he is simply a more sophisticated type of Yahoo. This voyage is the one that has the deepest effect on Gulliver. His return to England, and the way it affects him after life among the Houyhnhnms, is perhaps the most pathetic episode in the book.
  
  Swift has been labeled a misanthrope because of the view of humanity conveyed by _Gulliver's Travels_. The reader must remember, however, that the narrator of this book is not Swift, but Gulliver. In fact, Swift's works were published anonymously, as if the author wore a different mask each time he wrote one of his satires. Gulliver criticizes humanity, but he is even more worthy of criticism himself. Regarding Swift, he once wrote that he hated "that animal called man," but he loved individual human beings. This is not such an uncommon attitude. Other people feel the exact opposite. Many of us have heard the saying, "I love humanity, but people annoy the hell out of me." In any case, satire implies caring. If one didn't care about humanity and its institutions, one wouldn't bother to write about them. Behind the acerbic criticism lies a concern for what the satirist is criticizing, and a desire for improvement. Gulliver's Travels is one of the highlights in the immortal tradition that goes back to Petronius' _Satyricon_ and Apuleius' _Metamorphoses_, and which includes such varied works as Rabelais' _Gargantua and Pantagruel_ and William S. Burroughs' _Naked Lunch_.
  
  If you are looking for a physical copy of the book, I recommend the one that belongs to the Ignatius Critical Editions series. The quality of the paper and the binding are excellent. I decided to get this edition because it includes the text of Gulliver's Travels with its original typography (Nouns are capitalized, some Words or Phrases are in Italics, though sometimes it is hard to figure out the Reason why), and footnotes. Since these editions are meant primarily for students, many of the footnotes clarify terms that I myself did not need clarified (“inimitable,” for instance), but others are helpful when it comes to background and symbolism. The book also includes six critical essays, and I liked the variety of these. I especially enjoyed the essays by Mitchell Kalpakgian ("Gulliver the Epic 'Hero' and 'Great' Travel Writer A Modern Battles the Ancients") and Dutton Kearney ("The Man Who Is Not Virtue, Politics, and Gulliver's Travels).
  
  If _Robinson Crusoe_ is a realist novel, _Gulliver's Travels_ is a work of fantasy. Both are great traditions in English literature, and both of these books constitute early examples that have stood the test of time. Both works, furthermore, are highly moralizing, though the difference lies in the focus. Defoe's novel presents a positive example; Swift's book, several negative ones. In a sense, these works are two sides of the same coin. There is something for everyone in _Gulliver's Travels_. I don't hesitate to call it one of the most amazing books I've ever read. Some might say it is not a book for children, but I disagree. It is a book for children, but that is only one of the many things that it is.

• I read the Illustrated Classics version as a kid and when I was in my mid-teens, I read the full version. To this day, I am still enjoying both versions; which one I read depends on my mood and how I feel.
  The author uses great metaphors, like storms, to transition between different islands. Each change in setting teaches many important lessons without the reader really realizing it. How the author does this is a mystery and keeps the reader hooked,, wanting to know what will happen next snd if the characters will ever retturn home. You also wonder how things will change for thr main character if their journey does end and what the long lasting effects will be. Not just on that person, but those around them and where they live.
  This is an interesting, intriguing, edge of your seat book that you don't want to miss!

• This book might today be more remembered for the innumerable parodies of its early scene of Gulliver waking up, tied down on the beach by the tiny inhabitants of an unknown island, than it is for having actually been read. But this is a true classic, filled with witty humor and sharp satire on most aspects of then current European life, religion and politics. Which in all honesty haven’t changed much in the almost 300 years since the book was written.
  The one thing that keeps it from a full five-star score is that at times, mainly in the second of the four journeys, it does feel a bit repetitive. The first and second journey having much in common with each other.

• I started tracking my own bad habits (smoking, sugar, sleeping late), and putting an end to my own constant procrastination (cleaning, practicing music, exercise), all after a doctor had me track my eating habits. It all came down to repetition, logging, and alarms. Just making the tiniest effort to change a habit once a day is enough to start making progress. This book gives you that beginning, from changing your morning routine, doing just a little extra, or avoiding the normal morning annoyances by making small changes, and tracking those positive changes to give yourself some instant reward. I started working at home last year, and without constantly keeping notes on my daily tasks like a project manager, I'd end up just getting behind.
  
  The most important thing is to get some good new habits while getting rid of the bad ones, take it slowly, one at a time, until you have a good method you can repeat! You can always come back to the book for a few new ways to get started again!
• Got a bad habit you're trying to break? This book is for you, it gives you all the fundamentals you will need to correct yourself. Want to be make a change and be more productive? Fine but you have to stop the self-loathing or it will not work. A lot of people that want to make a change are guided by inspiration and that comes with motivation and then action. Self-Discipline is going to be very important if you decide to make a change so keep that in mind. I'd definitely recommend purchasing this book if you're looking for the right way to go about making changes in your life.

Die Weltmeere und ozeanischen Wasserflächen sind die mit Abstand am weitesten verbreitete "Oberflächenform" des Globus und gleichzeitig eben jene, von der wir am wenigsten wissen ... das Gebiet ist zu 99,9% weit weg vom bewohnten Festland und damit für uns ganz überwiegend "außer Sicht".
So vieles geschieht dort draußen, d.h. unter und neben unserem Schiff im Meer. Das zu erkennen und zu erklären, dafür ist die Ozeanographie zuständig, eine Wissenschaft, die Vertrauen schafft Wer auf dem Meer reist, der bekommt, mit ihr und durch sie, eine Ahnung davon, was der Ozean eigentlich ist und auf was sich sein Schiff bewegt.
Denn das Meiste davon ist nicht eben mal so zu sehen Verborgen im Wasserkörper "taucht es nicht auf" (Unterwasserrelief), "fließt es kaum erkennbar an einem vorbei" (Strömungen), "geht es scheinbar sinnlos rauf und runter" (Wellen und Gezeiten), "verweht es mit dem Wind" (Gischt), "löst es sich auf" (Salze) oder "ändert seine Gestalt" (z.B. bei Temperaturwechsel vom flüssigen Wasser zum festen Eis).
Erst die wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen der Geografen, Ozeanografen, Küsteningenieure und Hydrologen geben uns über Tiefenkarten (erstellt aus Echolotaufzeichnungen), Fließgeschwindigkeiten (Strömungsmessungen), Wasserstände und Gezeiten (Pegelaufzeichnungen) oder beispielsweise Sedimente (Bodenanalysen) im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes "Aufschluss".
Bei einem Blick über das Meer, vor allem vom fahrenden Schiff aus, fällt es dem Betrachter zwar nicht auf, aber es ist gesicherte Erkenntnis auch im Ozean "strömt" das Wasser! Eine der vielen Fragen ist also, was der Grund dafür sein kann, dass sich Strömungen im Ozean ausbilden; woher und wohin werden Wassermengen bewegt; welche Bedeutung haben die weltumspannenden "Förderbänder"; wie kann man sie messen und viele andere Fragen werden im Buch beantwortet.
Dazu müssen wir zunächst einige grundlegende Zusammenhänge erklären, um anschließend ganz konkret auf die Unterelbe, das Gebiet der Nordsee, den Nordatlantik und die Arktis einzugehen ... dabei vor allem auch auf den Golfstrom und den "untermeerischen Wasserfall", der eine maßgebliche Rolle im Gesamtgeschehen spielt. Wir betrachten natürlich die Eisabbrüche Grönlands, die Wanderschaft der Eisberge und die arktische Eisbildung nördlich von Spitzbergen. Nähern wir uns auf unserer virtuellen Reise Norwegen, wird die Fjordbildung erklärt, der "Mahlstrom" und der "Saltstraumen" betrachtet sowie an den Tsunami der "gga"-Rutschung erinnert.

• I didn’t really laugh or find the story all that funny. There were some highly enjoyable moments and some parts that dragged. Emotional connection with the characters is a huge part of reading for me and I didn’t feel all that invested. Parts of my lack of investment lead me to not be overly thrilled or devastated when the plot shifted. Overall, it was a good read, but nothing that suited what I was looking for at the moment.
• Sophia Money-Coutts has written the best book I've read this year. Beautiful writing style, super realistic scenes, truly felt emotions, I couldn't ask for more! Be prepared to look up British slang, it's so wonderfully different! I'm feeling fairly fluent in British English now! Please read this book, you won't regret it!
• I totally skipped from Chapter 8 to the epilogue . Just too slow moving for me. Polly is just not interesting to me and her problems are largely self-made, except for her mother. At 35% I stopped and jumped forward to see if I was right about the ending.
• I enjoy British lit so when I saw a review for this book I ordered it right away...and I'm so glad I did! It was a fun read and I stayed up way past my bedtime reading because I was so caught up in the stories of the characters. Definitely recommend the book and can't wait for Money-Coutts next book!

  Gah! Once more “women's fiction”, and as usual I have to have a quick moan – why do we do this – cut off potential readers? Who says men won't/don't read romance, they certainly write it, so why exclude them this way?
  
  So, the book. A debut novel and one that's really well written, and I loved the dry humour, and the realness of it.
  Loved Polly and her friends, her job at the magazine, very typically British Tatler style ;-) Poor Polly is approaching 30 though and feels that her time is running out, she wants a husband and family, but fears she's destined to be the mothball scented, elderly, maiden aunt...especially now her bestie is getting married and she's Matron of Honour and doesn't have a Plus One.
  I loved her relationship with her mum, and her support when her mum gets ill, the fears they both have that anyone who's been ill can understand.
  
  Its a fun read, made me smile in parts, sad in others and very very typically British. As a Brit I love that, we seem to have a slightly different sense of humour and the more subtle approach as here worked so well for me.
  Sadly the about turn at the end didn't work for me, I didn't feel it was real, hadn't got a sense of it coming throughout the novel, and TBH really let it down for me. With a different ending, the one that I kind of felt had been building I'd have given this a five, but as it is that change really let the story down IMO. Not the resolution I wanted -( I felt kind of unsatisfied, and cheated of what I'd expected it to be. Surprises are good, this one was just too much of a shock, IMO, and didn't gel with the rest of the story.
  
  Stars Three and a half, a terrific book right up to that turnaround at the end!

• 3.5 rounded UP because the whole novel was great fun to read.
  This really was a perfect summer read to 'put your feet up and relax'. The Plus One has a high Bridget Jones vibe although Polly is a much cooler and fun person than Bridget and she's certainly not as clumsy and insecure, so I think I actually like her a whole lot more!
  
  She doesn't have the most interesting job at a magazine called Posh! but I must say it did make for some very entertaining reading. Her job includes writing articles about the new IT-dog (because the rich have an obsession for horses, and dogs come a close second), finding baby scans so they know who the little ones can become friends with when born, to being sent to places she'd normally never go for the best scoop... like interviewing the new singleton marquess at his parent's castle, or attending 'special and top secret' parties frequented by people of the high classes.
  
  The Plus One isn't full of fairytales... although now that I think of it, the book does include a castle, a sheikh, a gold bath, bidet and loo seat... but at least in the bedroom department, when it comes down to it, it was hilarious and brutally honest -). The many struggles and thoughts flashing through Polly's head were super funny and made me snort OUT LOUD. Yep, damn this book.
  
  I think you get the idea what type of novel it is -). If you read this you're bound to get along with and root for Polly. Now there is a very serious health issue in this novel as well which makes it sometimes a bit more serious but overall this is just a fun chicklit novel that will transport you to a whole other world. I came to realise that even the rich and famous don't have the perfect lives and you can find sleazebags in every layer of society -). I was a fan of the colorful cast in the novel, her gay roommate Joe, best friend Lex, colleagues Lala and Legs, old friend Bill, but I would have liked to see their own lives more in detail too and missed a bit more intrigue and drama perhaps. The ending left me completely satisfied though, I saw what was coming but was very happy the way it ended.
• The Plus One by Sophia Money-Coutts a four-star read that will fizzle. I like a good girlie read, the drama and funnies, and this one on the surface does all that, but it does miss some pop. Polly made me chuckle at several different points in the story, but then she also made me rolls my eyes. I feel like if you are single you will love this book as Polly will make you chuckle at things you do yourself and make you realise dating is hard and you do need to laugh at life at times. Polly was good but the rest of the characters were just as much a part of the story and they each played their own part telling their story, some I liked more than others. I will admit reading Polly interact with her mum, made me give mine a call and make sure she knows how much I love her. If you are after a great summer read this is the one for you.
