Calligraphy for Beginners Hand Lettering Made Easy Using Faux Calligraphy edition by Shelley Hitz Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews

  • The habitually curious creative in me has always wanted to learn calligraphy but never carved out the time for classes, and self-study seemed boring to do alone.

Part of me worried I'd fall in love and get lost in making beautiful calligraphy things…at the expense of other more practical pursuits, and that I’d spend too much money on supplies. Over the last 40 years I'd already given up sewing, watercolor painting, knitting, crochet, decorative embroidery, needlepoint, rug hooking, sold my horse, and basically whittled my hobbies down to just one that is fun but pretty time-consuming - community theater.

But I never lost the desire to learn more about the basics of writing in calligraphy.

Faux calligraphy? Who knew? What a brilliant concept!

Reading Shelley’s book I learned right away that I already had all the supplies I needed to start. She made learning the basics of modern calligraphy, her terrific “faux” version of it, so easy and simple to understand. Once Shelley addressed it, I realized that I _had_ been thinking of calligraphy as a form of handwriting and not giving it its rightful place in my mindset as an art form.Surprisingly, embracing that concept helped me get over my worry up doing it wrong. In fact, I got so drawn into reading her book and how easy she made following along that I grabbed a pen and paper and did just that. See my photo for proof. )

Getting free access to her online course (invitation and URL is in the book) was a surprise and welcome bonus.

I also enjoyed the many photo examples towards the end of the book how others were putting their calligraphy skills to good and profitable use.

One last note Okay, so I knew going in that this book by Shelley Hinz was likely going to promote her services, other products, or advanced courses. But the truth is I didn't mind. I had fun reading her book and I can see myself referring back to it when I’m in a creative mood … or those odd situations when I’m responsible for providing Certificates of Achievement or playful party invitations. I’ll be recommending her book to others, too.
  • I love drawing letters, I do it on my knee anywhere I go. My husband even says STOP Writing! ) Now, I've watched Shelley do Calligraphy on Facebook and she does it amazingly easily. That couldn't be me! BUT -- I really think I can do this. I have downloaded the book, now the free worksheet, and just tried a few letters and had to race back here to write this. You don't need a fancy dancy calligraphy pen and this is really relatively simple to do -- with practice!
Seriously debated on purchasing yet another book I don't have time for... but WOW! So Impressed! Kudos to Shelley for an exciting book!
  • This is a great book, easy to read and easy to follow, and ideal for those with an artistic bent. My grand-daughter Evelyn is very creative, and I got this with the intention of sharing it with her; I know she'll love it and use it, too.
  • Getting started with faux calligraphy has never been easier. The author does an outstanding job at helping the reader jump right in with just regular pen and paper. She also gives tons of extra resources to encourage your calligraphy journey. Love it!!!
  • What a nice little instruction book! I am terrible at lettering! I have basic good handwriting but nothing fancy. This book makes it so easy its ridiculous! Very easy to follow step-by-step instructions, pictures, diagrams, lists of common mistakes and even pictures of finished products with beautiful lettering.

    Get it - try it!

I downloaded this when it was free for a day. Still super cheap at $2.99
  • This download is wonderful! I learned calligraphy the old way, but when my brother wanted to try lately I saw it would be a huge learning curve for him. This book is the best instruction out there. He is going to do well and have fun. Thank you shelly!!
  • This is a great book for those wanting to get started in faux calligraphy. It isn't meant to be an in-depth how-to book, just enough to get someone started in what could become a fun hobby. If you are into decorative planning or Bible art journaling or scrapbooking, here is a way to introduce lettering to your creations. There are links in the book to take you to free videos and downloads which are helpful to the process.
  • If you're looking for a book that will help you spruce up your journaling with faux calligraphy as your first step towards handlettering, you will find a solid foundation here. It reads easy like a friend sitting across the table from you bringing you up to speed. I couldn't recommend it enough!
